The Engineering Biology CDT
The Engineering Biology CDT is a joint course, run between the Universities of Bristol and Oxford. We admitted our first cohort in September 2024.
A CDT (Centre for Doctoral Training) is different to a PhD or DPhil programme, because it provides a year of cohort-based training for students before they begin their PhD or DPhil project. This means the duration of the course is a year longer, taking four years instead of three. This additional year allows students to enhance their skills and, explore research areas, and connect with potential supervisors, fostering a supportive community.
This type of training is particularly beneficial to those who have not yet chosen a research focus area.
Year 1: Course Structure
Induction and Foundation Training
The course starts with foundational training in Oxford, taking place from September to October.
Specialised Training
After the initial training, students move to Bristol to complete further specialised training, taking place in Bristol for six weeks before Christmas.
Research Projects
After completing these two training elements, students return to their Home institution, completing further projects after the New Year.
Key Research Areas
Each of the CDT students will research two short projects. Each project last 11 weeks and one of them will be developed into their main PhD project. The projects will align with the four main research areas of the CDT:
1. Robust methods for bioengineering
2. Rational biomolecular & biosystems design
3. Evolution-guided biodesign
4. Digital cells & AI
